Five-in-one photography reflectors: choose the surface before the size

Quick answer: decide whether to bounce, soften or subtract light

A five-in-one photography reflector can offer several different lighting tools in one kit. White and silver surfaces bounce existing light towards a subject; gold adds a warmer reflection; black can reduce unwanted reflected light; translucent fabric is used to diffuse light passing through it. Choose the job first, then the surface, size and way you will hold it.

Check the actual surfaces and physical pieces included. “Five-in-one” does not guarantee five separate panels or the same five colours across brands. A kit that changes surfaces with a removable cover may not provide two independently supported panels for simultaneous diffusion and fill.

What each surface is for

Manfrotto's reflector guide distinguishes white fill, the more directional reflection of silver and gold, and black negative fill. Westcott's fabric guide explains translucent diffusion and different kit arrangements. These descriptions are useful starting points, not promises of identical results from every fabric.

Surface Starting job Question to resolve
White A subtle fill on the shadow side. Can you place it where it catches enough useful light?
Silver A brighter, more directional reflection. Does the stronger highlight suit the subject?
Gold A deliberately warmer reflected tone. Is that warmth wanted, particularly when colour matters?
Black Reduce reflected fill or block unwanted light. Are you trying to deepen a shadow rather than brighten it?
Translucent Soften light travelling through the fabric. Can the panel sit between the source and subject without entering the frame?

For example, a shadowed side of a product may call for bounced white fill. Harsh light arriving directly at the product may instead call for diffusion. A surface that is useful for the first job is not automatically a substitute for the second.

Read the contents, not just the number in the name

The Godox reflective-disc range gives a concrete example: its RFT-05 lists gold, silver, black, white and translucent surfaces, while the five-in-one RFT-06 substitutes soft gold for black. Both have five options, but one does not provide the same black-surface choice.

Westcott describes a basic five-in-one arrangement with a diffusion panel and a reversible cover. Before buying any kit, ask:

  • Which exact surfaces are included, including whether “soft” means a translucent diffuser or a softer gold finish?
  • How many framed panels are supplied?
  • Does changing surface require removing and reversing a cover?
  • Can the combination you need be used at the same time, or will you need a separate panel?
  • Are a storage bag, handle, clamp, arm or stand included? Check each item rather than treating an illustrated setup as a packing list.

A light-path worksheet for one planned photograph

Write these six lines for a photograph you intend to make. The aim is to decide what needs changing before choosing a bigger kit.

  1. Subject and framing: a small product, a head-and-shoulders portrait, or a wider scene.
  2. Existing source: write where the window, sun or photographic light will be relative to the subject.
  3. One problem: shadow too dark, direct light too harsh, reflection too cool, or unwanted fill too bright.
  4. Light path: for fill, source → reflective panel → subject; for diffusion, source → translucent panel → subject; for negative fill, identify the unwanted reflected light you want to reduce.
  5. Panel position and support: mark where it can stand outside the frame and who or what will hold it there.
  6. Evidence before purchase: record surface, open dimensions, folded dimensions, number of panels and required support. Mark missing information “unknown”.

Worked choice: suppose your aim is to brighten one side of a tabletop product beside a window. Start your shortlist with a white bounce surface that fits the available space. If you also need to diffuse direct window light at the same moment, list a second separately positioned surface as a requirement. A five-surface label alone does not demonstrate that the package meets both jobs simultaneously.

A different branch: if that side is already too bright because of nearby reflected light, more white fill does not address the written problem. Compare a black panel or another way to reduce the unwanted light instead. This worksheet helps avoid buying extra reflective area when the task is to subtract light.

Choose a size you can actually position

Westcott's size guidance relates the panel to the subject and desired highlight. Use open dimensions to plan coverage, but also check folded dimensions and your bag. A panel that looks convenient in its pouch still needs room when opened.

For a solo shoot, include support in the decision. An assistant, a suitable holder and a stand are different arrangements; confirm the exact panel and support instructions before relying on one. If you cannot keep the panel and support under control, change the setup. This guide does not establish wind limits, safe stand loads or overhead mounting methods.

Compare a relevant five-surface listing

If your worksheet calls for white, silver, gold, black and diffusion options, compare the Godox FT05-1 60 × 90cm reflector listing at Buy2Fix. Its title specifies that size, and its description lists a translucent surface alongside the four coloured surfaces. Check the supplied pieces, open and packed dimensions, and how you will support it before ordering.

Use that as a listing-based comparison, not proof of full-body coverage or measured colour accuracy. The retailer's FT05-1 name is not identical to the RFT-05 name on Godox's range page; confirm the package identifier if you need a specific manufacturer model. No stand, measured diffusion strength, stock availability or tested result is promised here.
