Charging Port vs Battery: How to Diagnose a Phone That Won’t Charge
Share
Charging faults are one of the most common repair enquiries, and one of the most frequently misdiagnosed. Ordering a charging port when the battery is the real issue wastes time and money. Here’s how to isolate the fault before ordering parts.
Start with the Simple Checks
Before diagnosing hardware, confirm the cable and charger are working on another device. USB-C cables fail frequently, especially braided cables that look intact externally but have internal wire breaks near the connector. Try two different cables and a different charger before opening the device.
Inspect the Charging Port
Lint compaction inside USB-C and Lightning ports is extremely common and often mistaken for a hardware fault. Shine a light into the port and look for debris. Many “charging port replacements” are resolved by a 30-second cleaning job with a non-metallic pick.
Test for Intermittent Connection
If the phone charges in some cable positions but not others, the port’s internal contacts are worn or the port is loose. This points to a port replacement. If the phone doesn’t charge at all regardless of cable orientation, the fault is more likely in the battery or the power management circuit.
Check Battery Health
On iPhones, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Below 80% maximum capacity indicates a battery that warrants replacement. A battery that discharges rapidly, heats up during charging, or shows a swollen back panel should be replaced regardless.
The Systematic Order
- Clean the port and test with multiple cables (free)
- Test battery health via software
- Replace the charging port if physical wear is confirmed
- Replace the battery if health is below 80% or swelling is present
- If neither resolves the issue, the fault is likely a power management IC on the main board
