Standalone HDMI recorder or USB capture card? Check where the video goes

Quick answer

A standalone HDMI recorder can save video to attached storage without a computer. A USB capture device sends video to a compatible computer or other host for software to record. They are not interchangeable simply because both have HDMI and USB sockets.

Before buying, draw the complete route: source → recording device → storage or computer, with a separate route to a display if needed. Confirm which USB socket accepts storage and which, if any, sends video to a computer.

Three routes often confused in listings

Different jobs performed by video connections
Function Destination Evidence to look for
Standalone recording A USB storage device or other supported medium Explicit recording-to-storage support and supported storage requirements
Computer capture Capture software on a supported host Explicit USB video-output/capture support and operating-system requirements
HDMI passthrough A television or monitor Supported HDMI output resolution and refresh rate

A port marked USB HOST commonly describes a connection for a peripheral such as a storage drive. It is not evidence that the recorder will appear as a webcam on a laptop. Likewise, an HDMI output can pass a picture to a screen without sending that picture over USB.

Read the exact recorder version

The EZCAP280H HDMI recorder listed at Buy2Fix is described as recording to a USB flash drive or hard drive without a PC. If that is your intended workflow, compare its listed connections and package with the exact unit before ordering. Do not choose it on the assumption that it is a computer webcam-style capture card.

The manufacturer's current EZCAP280H page contains material and downloads labelled with several related revisions, including 280HB and other suffixes. That makes the supplied unit's model label and matching manual important. This guide does not transfer every feature or specification from those revisions to the Buy2Fix item.

Ask for confirmation before ordering if a particular recording format, storage capacity, audio input or computer function is essential. A familiar family name is not enough to settle a revision-specific requirement.

Input, passthrough and recording specifications are separate

A device may accept or pass through a signal that it records at a different resolution or frame rate. Look for all three figures rather than treating the largest number on a page as the recording specification.

For example, the current EZCAP280H family page lists 1080p at 60fps for passthrough and 1080p at 30fps for recording. Those separate figures show the distinction; verify the matching manual for your supplied revision before using them to plan a project.

Also confirm where the audio comes from. HDMI audio, a microphone socket and a separate analogue audio input are different routes. An unused or incompatible audio path can leave a recording silent even when the picture is visible.

Plan storage without risking existing files

Check the exact manual for supported drive type, filesystem, capacity and power requirements. Do not format a drive containing the only copy of important files. Back it up and verify the backup first. Storage compatibility cannot be inferred from the USB plug alone.

Use a short, authorised sample recording to check picture, sound and saved-file playback before recording something important. Open the resulting file on the device you will use to edit or share it. A preview on a television does not prove the saved file is complete.

Protected video is not a compatibility problem to bypass

Record only content you own or have permission to capture. Copy-protected HDMI sources may not produce a recordable signal. Do not buy a recorder expecting it to remove content protection, and do not treat a black screen as proof that the recorder or cable is faulty.

A one-page recording plan

  • Source device and permitted content: ______
  • Source output resolution/frame rate: ______
  • Exact recorder model and revision: ______
  • Recording destination: USB storage / computer / other ______
  • Verified recording resolution/frame rate: ______
  • Display/passthrough requirement: ______
  • Audio route and storage requirements: ______
  • Short saved sample played back successfully: yes / no

If you need livestreaming or computer capture rather than standalone storage recording, choose a device whose documentation explicitly supports that workflow. Adding another cable cannot create a missing capture function.
